Create CKD volumes
A storage volume is an identifiable unit of data storage. Storage groups are sets of volumes.
Prerequisites
- The storage system must be running HYPERMAX OS 5977.810.784, or later, and have at least one FICON director configured.
- Depending on the type of configuration selected, not all the steps that are listed below may be required.
- See Roles and associated permissions to determine the user roles that can perform this task.
Steps
- Select the storage system.
-
Do one of the following:
- Select Storage > Volumes. In the Volumes list view, click Create.
- Select Hosts > Mainframe. In the Actions panel, click Create CKD volumes.
- Select the Configuration type.
-
From the
Emulation list, select one of the following values:
- CKD-3390
- CKD-3380-not applicable for storage systems running PowerMaxOS 10 (6079).
-
Specify the capacity by typing the
Number of Volumes, and selecting a
Volume Capacity.
If the Model menu is available, selecting a model automatically updates the volume capacity to the correct capacity. Alternatively, you can manually enter a volume capacity by clicking
. NOTE: In 10.1.0.0, there has been a change in the rounding of GB/TB/MB to cylinders when creating or expanding a volume. Creating or expanding a volume in TB/GB/MB in some scenarios results in a volume slightly smaller or slightly larger than if you had created the same size volume in TB/GB/MB in release 10.0, for example, creating a 2TB vol is 1118481 Cyl in 10.1.0.0 , but in 10.0 a 2TB vol is 1118482 Cyl). If you want to create a volume in 10.1.0.0 and must guarantee that it exactly matches the size of a volume that was created using 10.0, you must specify the volume size in Cylinders and not TB/GB/MB when creating or expanding. - Optional: To add the volumes to a CKD storage group, click in the Add to Storage Group field to reveal a drop-down menu of available CKD storage groups. Click Clear to clear the selection.

Advanced Options
The advanced options that are presented depend on the configuration details. Complete any of the following steps that are appropriate:
- If required, type an SSID or click Select to choose one.
- To name the new volumes, select one of the following Volume Identifiers:
For more information about naming volumes, see Set volume names.None This identifier allows the system to name the volumes (Default). Name Only All volumes have the same name. Name + VolumeID All volumes have the same name with a unique volume ID appended to them. The maximum number of characters that are allowed is 50. Name + Append Number All volumes have the same name with a unique decimal suffix that is appended to them. The suffix begins with the value that is specified for the Append Number and increments by one for each additional volume. Valid Append Numbers must be from 0 to 1000000. The maximum number of characters that are allowed is 50. - Depending on the value selected for Volume Identifier, type a Name, or a Name and Append Number.
- If creating thin volumes or thin BCVs, you can specify to Allocate Full Volume Capacity. In addition, you can mark the preallocation on the thin volume as persistent by selecting Persist preallocated capacity through reclaim or copy. Persistent allocations are unaffected by standard reclaim operations.
- Click OK.
-
Do one of the following:
- Click Run Now to perform the operation now.
- Expand Run Now and click Add to Job List to add this task to the job list, from which you can schedule or run the task at your convenience. For more information, see Schedule jobs and Preview jobs.
